What the Church Needs Now is Love

34But when the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered themselves together.
35One of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him,
36“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?”
37And He said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’
38“This is the great and foremost commandment. Matthew 22:34–38

39“The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’
40“On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.”   Matthew 22:39–40

20If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for the one who does not love his brother whom he has seen, cannot love God whom he has not seen.
21And this commandment we have from Him, that the one who loves God should love his brother also.  1 John 4:20–21

John addresses this very idea in John 13:34-35)

34“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another.
35“By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
John 13:34–35

So, here is the basic layout…
What: love one another…
How: as I have loved you…
Why: all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another…

What is Love…

We need a model, a TEMPLATE to help us work this out day to day.
That template is found in Romans 5:8

8But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.  Romans 5:8

Love is Something you DO.

DEMONSTRATES is the significant word…action word God’s love compelled Him to DO something. He didn’t just think or talk about it…HE DID
The One Another passages tell us how to “DO LOVE”

Love requires DYINGto self.

Love is costly: The Price Tag is DEATH!
7Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.
8The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love.
9By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him.
10In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to bethe propitiation for our sins.
11Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.
1 John 4:7–11

16“For God so loved the world, that He gaveHis only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. John 3:16
  • When we prefer others above ourselves, we put them first.
  • When we comfort…we enter into their pain.
  • When we forgive…we die to our “rights”

Love loves others even at their WORST.

What does this look like in real life?

  • When husbands love wives…
  • when parents love children…
  • children love parents…
  • When Cristians love one another…
May we commit to love one another deeply, as Christ loved us.
