Common Bonds Between Islam and Catholicism

Common Bonds Between Islam and Catholicism

by Mike Gendron
Will the world’s two largest religions converge and be the catalyst for the prophesied one-world religion?  At first glance, the two faiths appear to be vastly different but under close inspection, they have more common bonds than differences. In 1994 the Vatican issued a publication entitled: “Spiritual Bonds Which Unite Us: 16 Years of Christian-Muslim Dialogue.” After extensive study and research, I put forth 10 common bonds that will help unite these two religions. The Real Jesus? part 2

Which Jesus do you worship?
If we are going to believe in Jesus for our salvation & eternal life, then we need to be certain it is the real Jesus in whom we are believing. We must remember that people have many different ideas concerning the true identity of Jesus. We cannot assume that everyone believes rightly about Jesus simply because they are using His name.
Take for instance some of the beliefs concerning Jesus from the following groups:
  • Jesus is the Eternal God… John 1:1-2
    • John 1:1-2… In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God.
  • Jesus is the Creator God
    • John 1:3… All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.
    • Colossians 1: 15-17 … He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. 17 He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.
    • (note: He didn’t create and step away…deism)
  • Jesus is the God who became a man
    • John 1:14… And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.
    • (Men want to be gods/Only Jesus became man) THE GOD/MAN
  • Jesus was VIRGIN-BORN (Matt. 1:21) so that He could offer Himself as the PERFECT SACRIFICE (Heb. 9:28) by bearing OUR SINS.
    • 1 John 3:5— You know that Heappeared in order to take away sins; and in Him there is no sin.
    • John 3:16— “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.

  • Jesus is the ONLY MEDIATOR between HOLY GOD & MANKIND
    • 1 Timothy 2:5-6… For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave Himself as a ransom for all, the testimony given at the proper time.
    • His death on the cross paid the price for our sins
    • Romans 5:6-8… For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

  • Jesus is the ONLY WAY, TRUTH, and LIFE
    • John 14:6… Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.
    • Acts 4:12… And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.”

The Real Jesus?

Which Jesus do you worship? If we are going to believe in Jesus for our salvation & eternal life, then we need to be certain it is the real Jesus in whom we are believing. We must remember that people have many different ideas concerning the true identity of Jesus. We cannot assume that everyone believes rightly about Jesus simply because they are using His name. Take for instance some of the beliefs concerning Jesus from the following groups:
Group Name What the Group Teaches Concerning Jesus
Christian Science/ Mary Baker Eddy… A man in tune with the Divine Consciousness, not the Christ. Furthermore, Jesus never did any supernatural miracles; he simply showed people their mental illusions of sin, evil, illness and disease. Christian Science says that Jesus did not die and his resurrection was only in a spiritual sense. Salvation Is Correct Thinking.
Islam Created being. A prophet.  Not God. Not the Son of God b/c God could never have a son. Jesus cannot save anyone, people are saved by Allah’s grace & good works.
Jehovah’s Witnesses Jesus is actually Michael, the Archangel. He was the first creation of God. He came to Earth as a man, died on a stake, and rose from the grave invisibly as a spirit. Jesus then returned invisibly to Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1914 to head-up the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society. Salvation comes not through Jesus, but through good works and being in their organization.
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day saints (Mormons) Jesus is the spirit brother of Satan. He was once a human being like you and I, but through good works he evolved spiritually to become a god. However, Jesus is just one god amongst a pantheon of gods, all of who were once human and evolved to become gods themselves. Jesus was born to Mary through physical incest when his father god had sexual relations with her. And Mormons teach that the blood and cross of Christ is foolishness and cannot fully atone for our sins (ever notice how there’s no cross on any Mormon church or temple?).
Hinduism Jesus is a holy man, as they do the leaders of other religions. He may even be an avatar, an embodiment of the supreme God. But he is not the one and only incarnation of God
Freemasonry Jesus was only a moral teacher. He was no better than Buddha, Confucius, Moses or Mohammed. They deny that Jesus was the light of the world and claim that Freemasonry is the true light of humanity.

The real Jesus is nothing like the descriptions above. Wanna learn about the Real Jesus? Go to the source, God’s Holy Word, the Bible. More tomorrow on the Real Jesus…

The Apostle to Islam

“Father, the hour has come; glorify thy Son in the Muslim world”

Samuel M. Zwemer (1867-1952), Hope College graduate, Princeton professor, RCA minister and “The Apostle to Islam,” prayed for the Muslim world like this:

Almighty God, our Heavenly Father, who hast made of one blood all nations and hast promised that many shall come from the East and sit down with Abraham in thy kingdom: We pray for thy prodigal children in Muslim lands who are still afar off, that they may be brought nigh by the blood of Christ. Look upon them in pity, because they are ignorant of thy truth.

Take away pride of intellect and blindness of heart, and reveal to them the surpassing beauty and power of thy Son Jesus Christ. Convince them of their sin in rejecting the atonement of the only Savior. Give moral courage to those who love thee, that they may boldly confess thy name.

Hasten the day of religious freedom in Turkey, Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, and North Africa. Send forth reapers where the harvest is ripe, and faithful plowmen to break furrows in lands still neglected. May the tribes of Africa and Malaysia not fall prey to Islam but be won for Christ. Bless the ministry of healing in every hospital, and the ministry of love at every church and mission. May all Muslim children in mission schools be led to Christ and accept him as their personal Savior.

Strengthen converts, restore backsliders, and give all those who labor among Muslims the tenderness of Christ, so that bruised reeds may become pillars of his church, and smoking flaxwicks burning and shining lights. Make bare thine arm, O God, and show thy power. All our expectation is from thee.

Father, the hour has come; glorify thy Son in the Muslim world, and fulfill through him the prayer of Abraham thy friend, “O, that Ishmael might live before thee.” For Jesus’ sake. Amen.

Not much seems to have changed since Zwemer’s prayer in 1923. However, many from that religion will, indeed, live before the Father. Others will bow before Him.  In time, there is no question, Jesus Christ will be glorified in the Muslim world. Let’s continue to pray for their salvation.
