Elect in Christ

6-14-16
You are a chosen race” (1 Pet. 2:9).

Election is the spiritual privilege from which all others flow.

Unlike those who are destined to destruction because of their rejection of Christ (1 Pet. 2:8), Christians are an elect race of people, bound together by God’s redeeming grace. That’s cause for great celebration!

First Peter 2:9 is an allusion to Deuteronomy 7:6-9, which says, “You are a holy people to the Lord your God; the Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for His own possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth. The Lord did not set His love on you nor choose you because you were more in number than any of the peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples, but because the Lord loved you and kept the oath which He swore to your forefathers, the Lord brought you out by a mighty hand, and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. Know therefore that the Lord your God, He is God.”

Like Israel, the church is the redeemed community of God, “chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, by the sanctifying work of the Spirit” (1 Pet. 1:1- 2). Before the foundation of the world, God placed His love on you, then brought you into His kingdom by granting you saving grace. That’s the doctrine of election.

Many people misunderstand election, but it’s a wonderful doctrine that brings marvelous benefits. It exalts God by demonstrating His love and grace toward miserable sinners. It eliminates pride by affirming that you are totally dependent on God’s grace. It should promote such gratitude in your heart that you long to live in holiness and serve Him at any price. It should also give you joy and strength, knowing that God will never let you go and His purposes will be accomplished in you. You can face any challenge with utmost confidence in His provisions.

Rejoice in your election. Worship God and yield to His Spirit’s leading so His choice of you will be evident to all who know you.

Gospel of Jesus’s Wife a Forgery

7-14-16
For years, some liberal scholars have used a small piece of papyrus to claim that the Gospels cover up an important detail about Jesus’ life. This fragment—named the Gospel of Jesus’s Wife—has been dated to 1,300 years ago and seems to indicate that Jesus was married.

In a response

to this find when it was first announced in 2012, we stated that the fragment was likely a fake, but even if it were legitimate, it would in no way prove that Jesus was married. Well, the news has been buzzing lately with a new announcement about this papyrus.

A piece of investigative journalism that appeared in The Atlantic painstakingly traced the mysterious provenance (the place of origin and record of ownership) of the papyrus before it came into the hands of Dr. Karen King, the Hollis Professor of Divinity at Harvard Divinity School who announced the papyrus, gave it its provocative title, and then staunchly defended it against the many critics of its authenticity. The journalist discovered that the provenance of this so-called artifact “tips the balance towards forgery,” according to King. This is quite an understatement by King, given the details of the case. It now appears the document isn’t authentic at all but is indeed a modern forgery.

Skeptics of the Bible used this tiny fragment of text to try to prove that the Gospels contained an inaccurate or fragmentary account of Jesus’ life. But of course, the Bible was right all along. Now, nowhere does Scripture state, “Jesus was not married.” But none of the Gospel writers—among whom were eyewitnesses and a historian who interviewed eyewitnesses—mention a wife and neither do any of the other New Testament writers. And besides, Jesus’ bride is the church (Ephesians 5:23–32), not a woman here on earth.

Whenever a new find emerges that skeptics claim contradicts the Bible or disproves something in it, we need to trust God’s Word. Eventually time will show that God’s Word was right all along. As Romans 3:4says, “Let God be true but every man a liar.” We can always trust God’s Word, from the very beginning.

GOOD NEWS:

Jesus has done everything needed to secure our salvation.

Here is what we need to understand about our sinful condition, the salvation provided through Jesus, and our response:
Being a Christian is more than identifying yourself with a religion or affirming a certain value system. Being a Christian means you have embraced what the Bible says about God, mankind, and salvation. Consider the following truths found in Scripture.

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A CHRISTIAN

Being a Christian is more than identifying yourself with a religion or affirming a certain value system. Being a Christian means you have embraced what the Bible says about God, mankind, and salvation. Consider the following truths found in Scripture.

God Is Sovereign Creator.
Contemporary thinking says man is the product of evolution. But the Bible says we were created by a personal God to love, serve, and enjoy endless fellowship with Him. The New Testament reveals it was Jesus Himself who created everything (John 1:3; Colossians 1:16). Therefore, He also owns and rules everything (Psalm 103:19). That means He has authority over our lives and we owe Him absolute allegiance, obedience, and worship.

God Is Holy.
God is absolutely and perfectly holy (Isaiah 6:3), therefore He cannot commit or approve of evil (James 1:13). God requires holiness of us as well. First Peter 1:16 says, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

Mankind Is Sinful.
According to Scripture, everyone is guilty of sin: “There is no man who does not sin” (1 Kings 8:46). That doesn’t mean we’re incapable of performing acts of human kindness. But we’re utterly incapable of understanding, loving, or pleasing God on our own. (Romans 3:10-12).

Sin Demands a Penalty.
God’s holiness and justice demand that all sin be punished by death: (Ezekiel 18:4). That’s why simply changing our patterns of behavior can’t solve our sin problem or eliminate its consequences.16

Jesus Is Lord and Savior.
The New Testament reveals it was Jesus Himself who created everything (Colossians 1:16). Therefore He owns and rules everything (Psalm 103:19). That means He has authority over our lives and we owe Him absolute allegiance, obedience, and worship. Romans 10:9 says, “If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved.” Even though God’s justice demands death for sin, His love has provided a Savior who paid the penalty and died for sinners (1 Peter 3:18). Christ’s death satisfied the demands of God’s justice and Christ’s perfect life satisfied the demands of God’s holiness (2 Corinthians 5:21), thereby enabling Him to forgive and save those who place their faith in Him (Romans 3:26).

The Character of Saving Faith.
True faith is always accompanied by repentance from sin. Repentance is agreeing with God that you are sinful, confessing your sins to Him, and making a conscious choice to turn from sin (Luke 13:3,5; 1 Thessalonians 1:9) and pursue Christ (Matthew 11:28-30; John 17:3) and obedience to Him (1 John 2:3). It isn’t enough to believe certain facts about Christ. Even Satan and his demons believe in the true God (James 2:19), but they don’t love and obey Him. True saving faith always responds in obedience (Ephesians 2:10).
